The diary argues that feeling, meaning direct bodily and emotional apprehension, is divine and alive. Thinking, meaning calculation, reasoning and intellectual detachment, is cold and deadening, and he treats it as the source of cruelty, war and greed. Nijinsky repeatedly declares himself to be feeling in the flesh rather than a thinking man, and he treats his dance and his writing as expressions of feeling that bypass the intellect.
Nijinsky asserts that eating meat directly stimulates sexual desire and violence, so abstaining from it is a path to moral and spiritual purity. He ties diet to conduct as a causal chain, blaming meat for his own lapses of lust and quarreling with his family over what they eat. On this view, how people treat animals determines how they treat each other.
Nijinsky judges every relationship by whether it gives freely or seeks to own. He condemns Diaghilev, his former lover and impresario, for loving him as a possession and treating art as a business. He also turns the same test on his marriage, on money and on bourgeois society, arguing that any love bound up with control, calculation or payment is not love at all.
