Self-observation as a clinician, with limits
The diary is candid about his addiction and sexual life, and he often observes himself the way a psychiatrist observes a case. He also admits at the outset that his disclosure is inhibited and his self-analysis painful. The diary shows clinical self-scrutiny that is partial and felt, not total and affectless.
