The Buddha

4 ideas

  1. Mind precedes and shapes all experience

Mental states come before the actions and experiences that follow from them, so suffering follows a corrupted mind the way a cart wheel follows the ox's hoof, and happiness follows a clear mind like a shadow that never leaves. Because the mind is the upstream cause, changing outcomes means training the mind first, not rearranging external conditions.

  2. Hatred never ends through more hatred

Answering hostility with hostility feeds the cycle, because each retaliation becomes the next grievance. Enmity stops only when one party refuses to return it. Holding thoughts like 'he abused me, he beat me' is what keeps resentment alive.

  3. Craving as a self-regrowing root

Craving works like a tree that sprouts again after it is cut down if its roots are left intact. Suppressing a desire only on the surface lets it return, so real freedom means pulling it out at the root. Craving also grows by being fed, like a creeper, which is why indulging it never satisfies it.

  4. Self-conquest outranks conquering others

Defeating a thousand men a thousand times in battle is a smaller victory than conquering yourself once. External achievements can be taken away or reversed, but mastery over your own reactions cannot. This moves the measure of strength from power over others to control of your own mind.
