1. Dorte skips university beside the tracks

   Dorte, a young woman enrolled in a university course, rents a small house right beside a railway line within train distance of Copenhagen, then simply does not go to her classes. Trains pass her window day after day while she fills the time with small domestic routines and loosely committed relationships with young men. Nothing dramatic forces her off course; the course just recedes as time accumulates.

2. Emotion carried by surfaces and omissions

   Read the flat, spare description of objects, meals, weather and routine as the actual emotional record, not as filler. By refusing to name feelings, the narration makes the reader infer loneliness, hesitation or longing from what is lingered on and what is conspicuously left out. The gap between what is said and what is meant is where the meaning sits.
