  1. Modernity has erased the intermediate realm

Modern thought reduces reality to a binary of the material world and an absolute God, or to the material world alone. Once the middle zone of mediation is removed, transcendence becomes either unreachable abstraction or superstition. Angelology is valuable because it restores a structured space between the human and the divine, where gradual ascent and communication become possible.

  2. The angel defined first by function

'Angelos' means messenger, and Pleșu gives priority to what an angel does, carrying and translating between levels of reality, over what it is made of. He still examines questions of angelic substance, bodies and appearances, but treats the mission of mediation as the more telling key to the angel's identity.

  3. Guardian angel as one's ideal counterpart

The guardian angel can be read as the personal image of what an individual is meant to become. It is a spiritual double that accompanies without coercing and respects the person's freedom. Seen this way, moral life becomes a dialogue with one's own vocation rather than obedience to external rules.

  4. The angelic fall as refusal of mediation

Lucifer's sin is pride understood as the wish to be a source rather than a transmitter. It is a refusal to pass on light received from above. Evil therefore appears as a break in the chain of communication: a being that tries to hold for itself what it was meant to relay.

  5. Sentimental angel imagery as spiritual degradation

Popular depictions of angels as chubby putti or sweet protective figures turn fearsome, intelligent powers into decorative kitsch. The trivialized image shows that the culture has lost its sense of the higher realm. Recovering angels requires recovering their gravity and the awe they provoke ('Fear not').
