A city like Delhi, built and rebuilt as successive cities on the same ground, can be read as all of its eras coexisting in one place rather than following each other in sequence. Seen this way, every present street is also the site of every earlier massacre, migration and ordinary life, and of the futures still to come. The past is therefore not gone but occupies the same space, only unseen.
Aseem's visions of other eras lead to psychiatric treatment and leave him isolated and doubting himself. The story does not make his perception wholly unshareable, since there are other seers who see as he does, and he keeps working.
Aseem's encounter with a woman from another time suggests that a single small act by an obscure person might matter to a life in another era. The story leaves the outcome uncertain rather than redemptive: Aseem fears his advice may have put her in danger.
