1. Strangled in Full View at Pageant

   Isabel Drew, a malicious actress, is killed on a raised tower set during a live pageant with armoured knights on horseback, in front of an audience and after anonymous letters had announced her death in advance. Inspectors Cockerill and Charlesworth trace the motive to an earlier death, a young man named Johnny Wise, for which Isabel and others connected to him were held to blame. That makes each person tied to the old tragedy both a possible target and a possible avenger.

2. Public Spectacle as Alibi Machine

   A crime committed while everyone watches a staged performance seems to have too many witnesses to be possible. But an audience watches the choreography, not the individual performers. Costume, armour, lighting and scripted movement make bodies interchangeable, so people are seen without being identified. The crowd certifies that an event happened while blinding itself to who did it.

3. Past Wrongs Organize Present Suspects

   Instead of asking who had the opportunity, ask who was implicated in an old injury, because an earlier death creates a network of guilt, grief and blame that later violence follows. Everyone linked to the original wrong becomes a suspect and a potential victim at once. Buried history is the real map of the crime.

4. Rotating False Solutions Before Truth

   The fair-play puzzle offers a series of plausible solutions, including suspects accusing themselves or each other, each consistent with most of the evidence. Each is then broken on one overlooked detail. Every clue is shown to the reader, so the misdirection works through the interpretations the reader is invited to adopt, not through hidden facts. The final answer is the one explanation that fits every clue without exception.
