1. Eumenides Kills On a Publicly Posted Schedule

   In Chengdu, a killer calling himself Eumenides, after the Greek Furies, publicly posts death notices naming each target, the offense they escaped punishment for, and the date they will die. The case begins when Sergeant Zheng Haoming, who had been quietly investigating a crime from eighteen years earlier, is murdered. A task force that includes Captain Luo Fei, a detective from the provincial town of Longzhou who is tied to that old case, forms to stop the killer. Even with advance warning and police protection around the targets, Eumenides keeps carrying out the executions.

   A predator who names his victim, crime and date in advance turns each murder into a public test of the state's ability to protect people. When the kill succeeds despite the warning, it humiliates the authorities more than a surprise attack would. The announcement is the real weapon: it shows the protector is powerless and makes the audience witnesses rather than bystanders.

3. Unpunished Guilt Makes Vigilante Justice Attractive

   When targets are people who evaded legal punishment, a killer can present murder as correcting the system's failures, and part of the public cheers. This leaves police defending both the victims and the principle that punishment belongs to due process, not private verdicts. The law's credibility depends on closing the gap between legal and moral guilt, because vigilantes exploit that gap.

4. The Investigator's Own Past as Evidence

   When a present crime is rooted in an old unsolved case, the investigators who lived through that case are both the best source of clues and possible suspects or targets. Reading the case this way moves attention from the killer's current movements to what the detectives themselves hid, lost or failed to finish years earlier. Unresolved history does not stay closed; it produces heirs who act on it.
