1. Ghalib survives the siege in Ballimaran

   During the 1857 uprising and the British recapture of Delhi, Ghalib stayed shut inside his lane in Ballimaran, which escaped the worst plunder because it housed the physicians of the Maharaja of Patiala and was guarded by Patiala troops. Around him friends were killed or exiled and his mentally ill brother Yusuf's house was looted before Yusuf died. Ghalib then wrote Dastanbuy, condemning the rebels and praising Queen Victoria, and sent copies to British officials while seeking restoration of his suspended pension.

2. A guarded diary still records grief

   Even while condemning the rebels and praising the British, Ghalib's diary records the city's fall, the loss of friends and his own confined survival. Its flattery of the victors does not erase this grief, though his limited news and selective reporting mean it is a partial record of what was lost rather than a complete one.
