Overland toward Cairo on public transport
Sihle Khumalo, a black South African who left a corporate job, travelled overland toward Cairo mainly by local buses, trucks and ferries, joining the northbound bus at Bellville after missing his planned Cape Town start and crossing from Sudan into Egypt by the Lake Nasser ferry. His account of what was chaotic, corrupt, slow or surprisingly functional on the ground sets his own experience against the 'Dark Continent' image that the book's title rejects.
