1. External Affairs chief guards tycoon's memories

   On the fictional island of Patusan, where the Korean conglomerate LK has built a space elevator, fragments of the late founding chairman's memories turn up in the neural implant of Choi Gang-woo, an ordinary employee. Those memories make him a target. Mac, head of LK's External Affairs, has to protect him as rival heirs and factions fight over what the chairman may have left behind.

2. Megaprojects as instruments of neo-colonial control

   A single piece of infrastructure, such as a space elevator, can make a foreign corporation the real sovereign of the place it stands on. The local economy, politics and security come to depend on the project, so local people lose control of their own island without any formal annexation. Whoever controls the infrastructure effectively governs, whatever the nominal state is.
