Ortese asks the reader to see the Earth not as ground beneath the sky but as a heavenly body itself, so that we already live 'in the sky' among the stars. This undoes the split between a sacred elsewhere and a merely usable here: once the planet is seen as celestial, exploiting it looks like desecrating a heavenly thing rather than managing a resource.
Ortese holds that modern, productive reason has stopped trying to understand the world and now only uses it. It sorts beings by their utility and discards whatever cannot be exploited: animals, the poor, the old, the invisible. The loss is spiritual before it is ecological, because a world treated only as material no longer has anything in it that can be revered.
Among the things Ortese asks of literature is that it keep in view the presences the social order leaves out: the poor, animals, the dead, the sense of mystery in things. She sets this witness beside her other accounts of writing, as imaginative discovery, as a way out of isolation, and as a return to peace, rather than making it writing's sole purpose.
