In the opening dialogue, Scudéry distinguishes conversation from the talk of business and recommends that a good speaker adapt topics to the company, moving between serious and lighter matters as suits those present. Dwelling on a single subject, whether learned or domestic, turns what should be a shared pleasure into something others must endure.
Raillery is permitted only when it targets small, correctable foibles the person can laugh at alongside the group. It must never target real misfortunes, physical defects, or serious faults. The test is whether the target can join the laughter; if they are wounded or isolated, the jest has become insult, and the reputation it costs belongs to the railleur.
In her discussion of flattery, Scudéry separates exaggerated compliments from praise aimed at a real merit. Praising a friend truthfully when praise is deserved is what gives the speaker standing to correct that friend's faults, while the flatterer who praises everything forfeits that standing.
