A forest clearing (claro) shows itself only to someone who is not looking for it. Deliberate searching turns the clearing into an object and closes it off, so the right stance is to stay at the edge, attentive and without a goal, and let the opening appear. Revelation is received, never captured.
Razón poética is reason that works through feeling, receptivity and participation instead of conceptual grasping and definition. It does not take hold of its object. It lets the object show itself, which brings back into knowledge the parts of experience, such as the dim, the half-formed and the felt, that discursive reason leaves out.
Zambrano describes one kind of awakening as a gradual emergence, where consciousness is still steeped in the sleep and darkness it comes from and waking renews birth. In that mode, the pre-conscious depths (the entrañas) feed clarity instead of opposing it. She also describes an instantaneous awakening without images that need not start from sleep, so gradual emergence is one form of waking, not the only one.
The book gives a special value to oblique, filtered light, like light through leaves, where things appear gradually and keep some of their mystery, as against a harsh light that flattens them. It also welcomes a whole light that does not dazzle, so what it opposes is blinding light, not full light as such.
Beneath communicative, instrumental language lies a primordial word that is not yet speech. It is closer to breath, silence and listening, and it arises from the depths of the person before it is used as a tool. Genuine speech comes from letting this word be born in silence, not from arranging concepts.
For Zambrano, method is not a procedure laid down in advance. It arises from an illuminating instant within experience. Knowledge moves discontinuously, with a clearing, then forest again, then another clearing, rather than along a continuous deductive line.
