Chronic Failures

  1. Poverty and medical profit feed each other

Medical markets do not simply fail the poor; they grow out of them. People shut out of public care have to buy, bargain and trade for treatment, and that pressure creates new paying markets in medicine. Profit depends on the poverty, and the poverty is deepened by the profit.

  2. Miracle cures can exploit the poor

A celebrated life-saving technology like organ transplantation can draw on the poor rather than serve them. When access depends on money and exchange, the hardship of poor patients and their families becomes the resource the treatment runs on.

  3. Patchwork welfare deepens the harm

A welfare system that covers some workers through their jobs and leaves the rest to the market does not cushion the poorest. It makes their situation worse. With no clear rule for who gets care, finding treatment for a lifelong illness becomes a disaster for those outside the system.
