1. Fan Kuan's Towering Mountain Landscape

   Around 1000 CE the Northern Song painter Fan Kuan painted 'Travelers Among Streams and Mountains,' a hanging scroll in which a huge central peak rises over a tiny mule train at the bottom edge. Its textured, stamped brushwork makes the rock feel massive and real, and the scale contrast makes the travelers seem insignificant before the order of nature. The painting is a clear case of landscape carrying a cosmological worldview, and it became the benchmark for monumental landscape in later Chinese painting.

2. Literati Painting as Amateur Self-Expression

   Scholar-officials developed an ideal of painting (wenrenhua) in which the painter was a cultivated amateur, not a hired professional. The value of a work lay in brushwork that revealed the painter's character and learning, not in accurate likeness or decorative finish. Deliberately plain, calligraphic, or 'awkward' execution could signal integrity, so a rougher technique could earn more status than polished skill.

3. Dong Qichang's Northern-Southern Schools Division

   In the late Ming, Dong Qichang sorted past painters into a 'Southern' lineage of intuitive, scholar-amateur masters and a 'Northern' lineage of technically skilled professionals and court painters. He modeled the split on the division between sudden and gradual enlightenment in Chan Buddhism, not on geography. The scheme ranked the Southern lineage higher and became the canon that shaped Qing orthodox painting, so a partisan critical theory ended up rewriting the history it claimed only to describe.

4. Style as Response to Political Circumstance

   Read changes in painting style as responses to the painter's position in society. Southern Song court painters such as Ma Yuan and Xia Gui used 'one-corner' compositions of mist and emptiness that suited a shrunken, inward-looking court. Under Mongol rule, Yuan scholars who withdrew from office, such as Ni Zan with his sparse, empty riverbanks, made reclusive and personal painting into a quiet statement of disengagement.
