1. Drunk sportswriter hunts vanished left-arm spinner

   W.G. Karunasena, a retired, alcoholic Sri Lankan sportswriter with a failing liver, spends his final year searching for Pradeep Mathew, a left-arm spinner of the 1980s said to bowl every delivery, including the chinaman, who has almost vanished from scorecards and official memory. The search turns up selection bribes, match-fixing, ethnic prejudice and civil-war violence. Karunasena's own account leaves Mathew's greatness open to doubt, but his son Garfield eventually traces Mathew to New Zealand.

2. Institutions help erase inconvenient talent

   Mathew's near-absence from the record has several causes the book names, including laziness, power cuts and bad luck, alongside the institutions that control selection, fixtures and archives. His mixed ethnic background and his clashes with selectors are among the reasons his performances go uncredited and his career is cut short. The official record reflects favour and accident as well as merit.

3. Sport as a small model of national dysfunction

   A country's sport has the same patronage networks, ethnic divisions and corruption as its politics, on a smaller and easier-to-follow scale. Watching who gets picked, who gets dropped and whose results go missing lets you read a society's power structure without looking at its politics directly. In Sri Lanka, selection bribes and match-fixing follow the same logic as the civil war and state violence around them.

4. Legacy search as a dying man's redemption

   A person facing death, having wasted much of his life, may put all his remaining will into proving one outside truth, such as that a forgotten person was great, because it gives him a legacy he can no longer build through family or career. Karunasena has let down his wife and his son, and his obsession with recording Mathew's genius stands in for the repair he cannot make with them. The quest is both a real search for justice and a way to avoid the personal reckoning he actually needs.
