1. Remittances build houses that nobody lives in

   Migrant workers send their city wages home, and the money becomes new multi-storey brick houses as proof of success and a claim on belonging. The builders stay away working for most of the year, so the village looks materially richer while its daily social life thins out. Prosperity measured in buildings hides depopulation measured in people.

2. Left-behind children inherit an emotional vacuum

   When both parents migrate, children are raised by aging grandparents who can feed and house them but cannot supervise or guide them. The cost is not mainly material. It shows up as loneliness, withdrawal, poor schooling and, in some cases, drift into delinquency, costs that are deferred and borne by the next generation.
