In the fishing villages of 1950s coastal Kerala, Karuthamma, a Hindu fisherman's daughter, loves Pareekutty, a Muslim trader's son—a bond their communities forbid. Her eventual marriage to the fisherman Palani unfolds against village custom and an old sea-goddess myth tying a husband's safe return to his wife's fidelity.

  1. A husband's safety rests on his wife

Among these fishing villages, people believe that if a married woman is unfaithful while her husband is at sea, the Sea Mother will take him. The danger of the work is pinned to a woman's chastity on shore, so her private conduct becomes a matter of life and death. The sea then works as a constant, all-seeing watcher over women's lives.

  2. Every safe return proves faithfulness

Because a fisherman's survival is believed to depend on his wife's fidelity, each time he comes home alive the belief seems confirmed again. A husband can keep trusting a wife despite village gossip, because the sea itself appears to vouch for her trip after trip. The belief keeps proving itself through ordinary events, which keeps it strong.

  3. Hired hands dream of owning

A fisherman who labours on other men's boats longs to buy a boat and nets of his own. Owning the tools of the trade, rather than selling his work to those who own them, is the household's driving ambition. That hunger shapes the family's choices from the very start.

  4. Myth runs through everyday life

In a poor, marginalised coastal community, sacred beliefs and rituals are not separate from daily life but woven into it. The same people who haul nets and haggle over fish also live by the sea goddess's watch. Their customs and myths shape how they behave as much as hard material need does.

  5. Community rules forbid the heart

A love that grows naturally between childhood playmates can still be ruled out when the two belong to different religions and social groups. The fishing community's norms and the rules of the sea override private feeling. The woman is married off to an acceptable man of her own kind instead.
