Reporting as criticism, not scorekeeping
The scorebook records what happened but not how it felt or what it meant. Cardus wrote match reports the way a critic reviews a concert, which he also did as a music critic: he judged the performance, the temperament and the drama behind the numbers. The report's value then lies in interpretation, which is why it has to be read alongside the figures and not in place of them.
