Kinship is enacted, not inherited
A grandparent relationship is made by repeatedly doing grandparent things: visits, gifts, shared secrets, small rule-breaking. It is not conferred by blood. Once both sides commit to the role and act it out, the bond becomes real enough to produce genuine love and genuine mourning.
