1. The Wrightsville New Year's Arsenic Poisoning

   Jim Haight returns to Wrightsville and marries Nora Wright, the banker's daughter he had jilted. Nora then finds letters in Jim's hand forecasting a wife's illness and death. When Jim's 'sister' Rosemary dies of arsenic from a New Year's Eve cocktail, Jim is tried for murder and refuses to defend himself; Ellery Queen eventually deduces that Rosemary was really Jim's first, undivorced wife, that Nora poisoned her, and that Jim stayed silent to shield Nora.

2. The Town Convicts Before the Court

   In a closed community, gossip reaches a verdict long before any trial, and that verdict spreads from the accused to his whole social network. The Wright family's neighbors turn on them, and the social punishment of shunning, whispering and loss of standing is imposed regardless of legal outcome. Reputation works as a collective, pre-judicial court that needs a culprit more than it needs the truth.

3. Documented Intent With a Misread Referent

   A written record of a planned crime seems to settle guilt, but its meaning depends on who the words refer to. Jim's letters about 'my wife' dying are read by everyone as a plot against Nora, so the town treats the documents as a confession. The misassigned referent hides who the actual wife was and therefore who had the motive.
