1. Song Gang's decline from loyalty to suicide

   Song Gang, the gentle, dutiful stepbrother, marries the town beauty Lin Hong and keeps his promise to his dying mother to look after Baldy Li. When the reform-era boom arrives he is laid off, damages his lungs doing manual work, and leaves town with a con man to peddle fake goods, getting breast implants to sell breast-enhancement cream. He returns to find Lin Hong living with the now-rich Baldy Li, and he kills himself by lying down on the railway tracks, showing how honesty and fidelity became liabilities in the new economy.

2. Two eras as mirrored extremes of desire

   The novel divides modern China into an era of repressed desire under the Cultural Revolution, when a boy is paraded for peeping and a decent man is beaten to death for his class label, and an era of unleashed desire under reform, when everything including sex and virginity is for sale. Reading the two halves as mirror images shows the brutality of the first and the vulgarity of the second as one society lurching between extremes, with no stable middle where ordinary decency can survive.

3. Commodified purity: selling the fake virgin

   Baldy Li's town stages a National Virgin Beauty Pageant, and it immediately spawns a trade in artificial hymens and hymen-repair surgery, so contestants buy back the very purity the contest claims to reward. The mechanism is that once a market prices a moral quality, it creates a supply of counterfeits of that quality. This empties the virtue of meaning while the spectacle keeps running. The pattern starts early: as a boy, Baldy Li sells the story of what he saw while peeping in exchange for bowls of noodles.

4. Grotesque exaggeration as a route to realism

   The book's crude, farcical excess is a deliberate method rather than a lapse of taste. Yu Hua concentrates absurdity, as in a scrap tycoon on a gold-plated toilet planning a trip to space, to approach a reality that itself compressed vast upheaval into a few decades and rewarded the shameless. The exaggeration is his way of matching the absurdity of the actual social transformation, not a claim that no other style could register it.
