1. Eli Bell's childhood in Brisbane's heroin trade

   In 1980s Brisbane, Eli Bell is babysat by the famous escapee Arthur 'Slim' Halliday while his stepfather Lyle deals heroin for the businessman Tytus Broz. After Lyle disappears and Eli loses a finger, he spends his adolescence trying to reach his imprisoned mother and expose Broz, a pursuit that leads him toward crime reporting. The novel follows one boy turning the losses his family suffered into a drive to tell the truth about the men who caused them.

2. Do your time before it does you

   Slim's prison survival rule holds that confinement destroys a person who passively waits it out. Filling time on purpose, through routine, imagination, planning and small acts of will, keeps a person the author of their days instead of their victim. The same rule applies to any trapped circumstance, including a childhood you cannot leave.

3. Goodness measured by acts, not labels

   Eli keeps asking whether a person is a good man, and the answer rarely matches legal or social categories. A heroin-dealing stepfather is a devoted father and a convicted killer is the most trustworthy moral guide, while a respectable businessman is a monster. The lens judges character by how someone treats the vulnerable people who depend on them, not by their record or their trade.
