1. Mars Constitutional Congress at Pavonis Mound

   Delegates included Reds opposed to terraforming, Greens in favor, Bogdanovist radicals, native-born youth, and corporate-aligned 'metanat' interests. Mediated by the negotiator Art Randolph, with the engineer Nadia Cherneshevsky drawn reluctantly into leadership, they produced a decentralized federation of semi-autonomous city-states under a small executive council, plus a powerful environmental court that could review and block terraforming projects.

2. Eco-economics: pricing the biosphere into markets

   The Martian economy, designed by the characters Vlad Taneev and Marina Tokareva, treats land as something held in stewardship for use rather than owned outright. Firms are required to be worker-owned cooperatives. Taxes and costs are set according to a project's measured impact on the biosphere, so ecological damage appears as a real price in economic decisions instead of an unaccounted externality.

3. Spatial zoning to settle irreconcilable values

   The conflict between preserving a lifeless, pristine Mars (the Red position of the geologist Ann Clayborne) and making it habitable (the Green position of the scientist Sax Russell) was not settled by one side winning. Instead the planet was divided physically: terraforming of the atmosphere was capped so that thick, breathable air exists only at lower elevations, while the great volcanic heights stay near-vacuum and primal. When two values cannot be merged, each can be given its own territory, and a measurable boundary can do the work that persuasion cannot.

4. Radical longevity outruns memory and power turnover

   Longevity treatments let the First Hundred live past two hundred years, but their minds cannot retain that span. They suffer memory collapse, the eerie feeling of déjà vu, and loss of the continuous personal story that makes a stable self. Long lives also keep the founding generation in positions of power, so the society must make a deliberate effort to hand authority to the native-born, whose identity was formed on Mars rather than Earth.
