  1. Gan witnesses Lomas's birth, then chooses

On the alien world where humans live in a Preserve, young Gan helps T'Gatoi, the Tlic who raised him, cut hatching grubs out of Bram Lomas, a man whose Tlic partner was absent when his eggs hatched. Horrified, Gan takes a hidden rifle and considers refusing or killing himself. When T'Gatoi says she will implant his sister Xuan Hoa instead, he accepts the eggs himself, bargaining to keep the gun and demanding that she face the risk she asks of him.

  2. Hosting bodies as rent for sanctuary

Humans who fled Earth survive through a negotiated arrangement: they receive a protected Preserve, and families in return supply hosts for Tlic eggs. Intermediaries like T'Gatoi hold back Tlic factions that would otherwise farm humans as livestock. Survival for the weaker species is bought by making its bodies useful on terms the stronger species can accept.
