1. Kholodny Yar otamans lured into Cheka trap

   In the early 1920s, peasant partisans in the Kholodny Yar forest of central Ukraine kept fighting Bolshevik rule after Ukraine's organized armies had collapsed. They were beaten less on the battlefield than by Cheka provocation. In 1922 agents posing as envoys of a Ukrainian insurgent command lured the otamans to a meeting in Zvenyhorodka and arrested them. They were held in Kyiv's Lukianivka prison, rose up in February 1923, and were killed.

2. Amnesty and infiltration defeat insurgents better than force

   A regime that cannot out-fight rebels in their own terrain can dissolve them by offering amnesty and planting informers. The promise of a way home splits fighters into those who surrender and those who fight on, and the trust that holds a band together turns into a vulnerability. The decisive losses come from deception and betrayal, not battle.
