1. Mara: bride-price wife trafficked to Germany

   Mara, a young woman from the Ghanaian village of Naka, is married off by her father to Akobi in exchange for bride-price goods, follows him to Accra where he beats her while she sells boiled eggs, and her family's resources help pay his passage to Germany. When she joins him in Hamburg, she finds he has a German wife for residency papers and a Ghanaian girlfriend, and he coerces her into prostitution, which later takes her to a Munich brothel. She eventually engineers his downfall but, degraded and addicted, does not return home, sending money instead.

2. Bride-price frames wife as husband's property

   In Mara's case, a marriage secured through goods paid to her father lets Akobi and her own family treat her labor, body, and earnings as his to use rather than as a partner's contribution. That framing helps each escalation, from servitude and beatings to the surrender of savings and the sale of her body, pass as a husband's prerogative, even though some figures such as Mama Kiosk object and other women step in to help her.

3. Remittance shame traps the migrant abroad

   Relatives back home judge a migrant by the money and goods they send, not by how that money was earned. A victim of sexual exploitation can therefore keep funding her family and keep her standing with them only by staying silent and staying away, because going home would expose the source of the money and cost her that standing. Shame and family expectation end up holding her in place as firmly as the trafficker does.

4. Trafficking disguised as intimate kinship

   Look for trafficking inside kinship ties, not only among strangers: the recruiter is often a husband or relative who uses marital duty, fake sibling identities, and control of documents and language to isolate the victim. Because the coercion runs through relationships she is expected to obey, she may not see herself as trafficked until the exploitation is already complete.
