1. Clara's Breakdown and Months in Asylum

   While proceedings to annul her unconsummated marriage to Archie are still under way, Clara Batchelor falls into an intense love affair with the young officer Richard Crayshaw, and a psychotic breakdown and committal to an asylum follow. Told in the third person, the novel follows her through about nine months of confinement, with delusions of being transformed into other creatures, force-feeding and a padded cell, until she slowly recovers without fully understanding how. It draws on Antonia White's own stay in Bethlem in 1922-23.

2. Treatment Seen From Inside the Delusion

   Seen from the patient's side, clinical procedures such as tube-feeding, restraint and seclusion are not experienced as care. They are absorbed into the delusion's own logic as punishment, torture or proof of transformation. Psychotic experience has its own internal coherence, so an intervention meant to help can deepen terror unless the institution reckons with how the patient actually perceives it.
