1. Franz Biberkopf's Three Blows After Prison

   Franz Biberkopf, a Berlin cement and transport worker, leaves Tegel prison after four years for killing his girlfriend Ida and vows to stay decent. He is first betrayed by his street-peddling partner Otto Lüders. He then loses his right arm when the gangster Reinhold throws him from a getaway car during a burglary, and finally loses his lover Mieze when Reinhold murders her in the woods at Freienwalde. Franz collapses into catatonia in the Buch asylum, confronts Death, and emerges as a sobered assistant doorman at a factory.

2. Solitary resolve to be good fails

   Franz's vow to be decent fails because it rests on individual willpower and a refusal to look at how others actually behave. He treats misfortune as bad luck to be shouldered alone, which makes him easy prey for anyone who flatters his strength. The novel's resolution is that survival requires seeing clearly, admitting one's own share in the harm, and binding oneself to other people rather than standing alone.

3. The city as competing voices around Franz

   Döblin sets advertisements, tram routes, weather reports, statistics, pop songs and scripture beside and sometimes inside Franz's thoughts, so he appears as one voice among many in a noisy city. Some of his inner life is visibly made from the slogans and noise around him, while an intrusive narrator comments on and interprets his fate. The montage shows his personal story shaped in part by an environment that talks at him from every side.

4. Slaughterhouse as mirror of human fate

   Clinical passages on Berlin's central slaughterhouse (livestock prices, bolt guns, the bleeding of calves) are placed beside Franz's story. The pairing presents a creature led calmly through a system it cannot comprehend until the blow lands, and it recasts his suffering as processing by a vast impersonal machinery. It also echoes the biblical sacrifice of Isaac, raising whether one submits to the knife blindly or knowingly.
