1. Remembered City Versus Lived City

   In the novel, Jawad holds on to a remembered Beirut while Asmahan, who stays, lives in a city being continuously altered by the war's damage and adaptations. The gap between their two versions of Beirut strains their exchange without ending it, since their intimacy still develops across it. The choice to leave or stay appears in part as a choice about which image of home one carries.

2. Addressing the War as a Person

   Treating a war as a correspondent rather than an event reframes it as an intimate, even familiar presence that structures daily routines, relationships and desires. Seeing it this way reveals how prolonged conflict stops being an interruption of life and becomes its medium. People bargain with it, resent it and are shaped by it the way they would be by a difficult relative.
