Children cannot measure the adult weight of acts
Children may do something they judge as small and playful without seeing how adults will value it or answer it. The gap between the child's reading of the act and the adult's reaction produces fear and a sense of helplessness. Moral learning happens in that gap, often abruptly and painfully.
