Nušić tells his life from birth through schooldays, first loves and courtship, then ends the autobiography at his marriage. His comic stated reason is that after the wedding a man's life stops being his own story and belongs to the household. The structure itself is the joke: the conventional climax of a life becomes its narrative end.
The book follows the formal checklist of the serious memoir: ancestry, birth, naming, formative teachers and first love. It fills each slot with trivial, embarrassing or accidental material. Taking the conventions literally exposes how much self-importance a genre builds in, so no separate critique is needed.
In Nušić's schoolroom episodes, grammar, geography and other subjects are drilled as memorized formulas and lists, enforced by fear of the teacher and the grade. The child learns to perform the expected answer without grasping its meaning. The absurdity comes from the gap between the solemnity of the method and the uselessness of what it produces.
