Silence helping abuse and violence persist
In the novel, the silences around abuse and gang violence help them continue: Kat hides her bruises, children keep secrets to protect adults, and men's unspoken grief comes out as rage. Each silence feels like protection or loyalty to the one keeping it, yet together they keep the violence hidden. Naming what happened matters to the novel, but the decisive break also comes through physical intervention, when Beth shoots Stu.
