Attraction to a suspect compromises detection
Alleyn falls for Troy, who owns the studio and is formally a suspect. The novel treats this as a real professional hazard. He has to question her as rigorously as anyone else, knowing that this rigor may damage the relationship he wants. The detective's impartiality is shown as something he actively maintains against his own interest, not something he simply has.
