1. Monsieur Sans-délai's Fifteen-Day Madrid Errand

   In 'Vuelva usted mañana' a French visitor, Monsieur Sans-délai, arrives in Madrid expecting to settle his genealogical research and an investment proposal in fifteen days. Every clerk, tailor, copyist and ministry official answers 'come back tomorrow'; after six months his project is shelved or rejected, and he leaves with nothing done. Larra reads the episode as the cost of a national habit of deferral, in which each person's small delay compounds into total paralysis.

2. 'En Este País' as Self-Exempting Blame

   Larra dissects the stock phrase 'in this country' ('en este país'), which speakers use to condemn national backwardness while quietly exempting themselves from it. Blaming an abstract collective lets each person keep the very habits he complains about, so the complaint becomes a substitute for reform rather than a step toward it.

3. The Public Is a Fiction

   In 'Who Is the Public and Where Is It Found?' Larra hunts for 'the public' that authors, impresarios and politicians claim to serve and finds only contradictory fragments with incompatible tastes. The unified public is a rhetorical fiction each speaker invokes to lend authority to his own preferences. Anyone who claims to speak for or please 'the public' is really naming his own chosen slice of it.

4. Half of Spain Killed by the Other

   In 'Día de difuntos de 1836' Larra turns the All Souls' visit to the cemetery inside out: the true graveyard is Madrid itself, where institutions, liberty and hope lie buried. His epitaph, 'Here lies half of Spain; it died of the other half,' states that the nation's decay comes not from outside enemies but from factional self-destruction.

5. Writing in Madrid Is Weeping

   In 'Horas de invierno' Larra writes that to write in Madrid is to weep, to seek a voice without finding it. He ties this literary despair to the neglect of an indifferent readership and the persecution writers face.
