   Ada, an effeminate gay beautician who runs a salon in a Philippine provincial town with his assistant Didi, is handed a glowing stone that fell from the sky, swallows it, and by shouting 'Zaturnnah!' becomes Zsazsa Zaturnnah, a statuesque, super-strong woman. As Zsazsa, Ada fights giant frogs, zombies and the Amazonistas, man-hating women from another planet, while privately falling for Dodong, a heartbroken young man who drifts into the salon. The case lets a reader follow a queer man through the full arc of a mass-market superhero plot and see what changes and what does not.

2. Queerness breaks gender-war binaries

   The Amazonistas frame the conflict as women against men and expect Zsazsa, who appears to be a woman, to side with them. Ada is a man in a woman's body who loves men and does women's hair, so the enemy's logic has no category for him. The narrative uses this to show that separatist gender essentialism, whether patriarchal or matriarchal, collapses when it meets people who do not fit its two boxes.
