1. Solving a crime need not bring justice

   In a Mexico City where police, the ruling party, and business are shown working together, finding out who committed a crime does not reliably lead to justice. Belascoarán does resolve his cases, but that resolution is not shown bringing the institutional punishment the classic detective story promises, so his persistence reads partly as witness and personal stubbornness.

2. Surviving hero myth as a refusal of defeat

   The rumor that Zapata never died keeps a betrayed revolutionary program alive by keeping its leader alive. A people whose revolution was taken over by the governing party can use the undead hero to say the original promises are still owed. Chasing the rumor is less about facts than about testing whether the ideals still have anyone who carries them.
