1. American Veterans Win 1866 for Bavaria

   In Amery's alternate 1866, the Kingdom of Bavaria hires a band of battle-hardened American Civil War veterans as mercenaries and military advisers. With their help, Bavaria defeats Prussia in the Austro-Prussian War, and German history does not converge on Prussian-led unification. The novel narrates this counterfactual in the manner of a historical account, treating the imagined outcome as documented fact.

2. Prussian Hegemony Was Contingent, Not Destined

   The Prussian-dominated, militarized German nation-state was not the inevitable result of deep historical forces. It hinged on the outcome of one short war, which could plausibly have gone the other way. Changing that single military result at a pivot point opens a whole alternative national trajectory, which undercuts teleological narratives that treat 1871 as Germany's natural destiny.
