The novel does not give one authoritative account of a family. It passes the narration from woman to woman, and each speaker retells shared events through her own grievances, loyalties and blind spots. The family's truth becomes visible in the contradictions and silences between versions, not in any single voice. Reading a family, or any group, this way treats disagreement between members as the data rather than as noise to be resolved.
