All the Roads Are Open

  1. Open Roads Do Not Free You

Physical freedom of movement does not cure inner restlessness. The traveler carries the same disquiet from place to place, so each new horizon offers relief only briefly before becoming another point of departure. Having every road open can make it harder to settle anywhere, because no destination is ever enough.

  2. Landscape as Mirror of Mood

Schwarzenbach describes deserts, high passes and empty plains in terms that reveal her own states of loneliness, exaltation and despair. Read this way, travel description is partly self-portrait: what the traveler notices and how she renders emptiness shows her interior condition as much as the terrain.
