1. Eunice Paiva after Rubens Paiva's disappearance

   In January 1971, military agents took former congressman Rubens Paiva from his Rio de Janeiro home. He was tortured and killed, and his body was never returned. Eunice was also detained and interrogated for about twelve days, and afterward she raised five children alone, moved the family to São Paulo, earned a law degree in her late forties, and became an advocate for victims of the dictatorship and for Indigenous land rights. Only in 1996, a quarter-century later, did the state issue a death certificate. She later lost her own memory to Alzheimer's.

2. Disappearance as a death without closure

   An enforced disappearance withholds the body, the date and the acknowledgment, so the family cannot grieve, and the victim does not legally die. Without a death certificate, the widow was blocked from inheritance, property and her husband's bank accounts. This paperwork limbo extended the state's violence for decades after the killing, and winning the certificate became a political victory in its own right.

3. Personal memory loss mirrors national amnesia

   The book sets the mother's Alzheimer's against Brazil's official forgetting, which was institutionalized by the 1979 Amnesty Law that shielded the torturers. The woman who spent her life insisting the crime be remembered loses her own memory. This forces the question of who carries the record once individual witnesses fade, and the book's answer is that writing and testimony must take over that job from living memory.

4. Composure as refusal of victimhood

   Eunice told her children to smile in press photographs and declined to perform public grief. She denied the regime the image of a broken family and denied the public a figure to pity. Her restraint was a deliberate political stance: dignity and ordinary life, carried on in plain view, served as resistance, even though the cost was private and unseen.
