  1. Zenith Bank's founding and rise in Lagos

In 1990, during a wave of Nigerian bank licensing, Jim Ovia left a career at an established bank and founded Zenith Bank as a single branch in Victoria Island, Lagos. Its starting capital was small, and it entered a market dominated by older, largely foreign-linked banks. By investing early in technology and aggressively recruiting young, educated staff, Zenith grew into one of Nigeria's largest banks by assets and listed publicly in 2004, so it counts as evidence that a late entrant can overtake incumbents in a frontier financial market.

  2. Africa's dysfunction read as unmet demand

Where outsiders see Africa's infrastructure gaps, underbanked populations, and institutional weakness as reasons to stay away, the entrepreneur reads each gap as a market no one is yet serving. On this view, a young, fast-growing population plus rising urbanisation turns today's deficits into tomorrow's revenue for those who build locally and endure volatility. Risk and opportunity are the same fact seen from different time horizons.
