1. Max's letters destroy Martin through censors

   After Martin refuses to shelter Max's sister Griselle, a Jewish actress in Berlin, and she is killed by stormtroopers at his door, Max begins sending Martin chatty letters full of fake coded references to 'Picasso reproductions', exhibition sizes, and 'our Leader' as if Martin were part of a Jewish-American conspiracy. Martin begs him to stop because the censors read everything, but the letters keep arriving, and the last one comes back marked 'Address Unknown', meaning Martin has been disappeared by the regime he joined.

2. Rationalization accompanies Martin's decisive breaks

   Martin's conversion moves from praise for Hitler's energy to talk of national renewal, and his letters explain each step as necessary. The friendship still ends in explicit acts: he tells Max to stop writing to him, and he refuses to shelter Griselle. Rationalization frames these breaks but does not hide that he chose them.
