Karachi's breakdown set beside earlier ruined cities
The novel reads Karachi's 1990s disintegration alongside earlier lost cities, including Delhi after partition, Muslim Spain, and the Hindu city of Dwarka. Setting these ruins beside one another gives the present crisis a longer echo of cities that have fallen before, without making a new dispersal inevitable.
