Rigorous counts must replace inflated census figures
Conservation policy built on unverifiable totals, such as India's old pugmark census, hides population declines and protects bureaucrats instead of animals. Only statistically defensible monitoring, which estimates detection probability and reports uncertainty, can show whether management is actually working. Honest numbers are therefore a precondition for effective conservation, even when they are politically unwelcome.
