1. Moon and Sun at war over Venus

   A ship sailing west past the Pillars of Heracles is lifted by a whirlwind and carried through the air for days until it lands on the Moon. There King Endymion's moon-men are at war with King Phaethon's sun-men over who may colonise the Morning Star (Venus), with armies riding giant vultures and flea-archers. The Sun wins by building a double wall of cloud that cuts off the Moon's light, and the war ends in a formal treaty that parodies the terms of Greek interstate peace settlements.

2. The announced lie is the honest lie

   The narrator opens by declaring that the only true statement in the book is that everything in it is false. He argues that this makes him more honest than historians and poets like Ctesias, Iambulus, and Homer's Odysseus, who told equally impossible things while claiming they were true. The fault is not in inventing but in misrepresenting invention as report, so disclosure of fiction turns a lie into a licit entertainment.

3. Satire by deadpan literalised marvels

   Lucian mocks credulous travel writing by copying its method exactly: first-person eyewitness voice, precise measurements, and sober ethnographic description, all applied to absurd content. Examples are rivers of wine, women who are grapevines from the waist down, a whale two hundred miles long, and moon-men who bear children in the calf of the leg. Because the form is faithful and only the content escalates, the reader learns to see that the authority of the source genre came from its style, not its evidence.

4. Unverifiable reports and the teller's authority

   The book suggests that claims about distant lands and past events can hardly be checked by the reader, which leaves room for exaggeration on the teller's word. Lucian plays on this by having the narrator interview Homer on the Isle of the Blessed, where Homer settles scholars' disputes with trivial answers, and by ending with a promise of further books that are not in the surviving work. Reading this way, you can ask of a report from far away whether it could be checked, and if not, what is giving it authority.
