The 1997 baht collapse was not the moment Thailand's model failed but the moment its accumulated failures became visible to outsiders. By the time the currency broke, fast growth had already eroded forests, rivers and rural livelihoods, so judging the boom only by GDP and financial indicators missed that it was unsustainable from the start.
