Skill is codifiable into teachable rules
The treatise assumes that what separates a strong whist player from a weak one is not innate card sense but a finite set of principles about leads, returns, and inferences from partners' play. Once these principles are written down, a novice who follows them can play much closer to expert level. Expertise is treated as a set of rules that can be transferred.
