Diagnosis as retroactive rewriting of self
A diagnosis received in adulthood works less as a medical label than as a new explanation for an entire past. Episodes once filed as 'I was bad' or 'I was wrong' get re-sorted into 'my brain worked differently and no one knew.' That shift from moral failing to neurological difference is what lets a person see herself as a whole, legitimate person rather than a defective one.
